Raptor roosting site - Harrier
This year was amazing. It was one of the only few season where I cover all three site and monitor the harrier from 3 different site. All with roosting and yield great result. It was not easy putting to the test the methodology used to detect roosting site however the method prove to be effective over and over again. Photo below is a small potion of harrier common into roost.
Pied identified were mainly female and juvenile as in below.
This include a male juvenile Pied Harrier. Why male? Only male will show yellow eye in this age molt category
Eastern Marsh Harrier were at their abundance. From adult to juvenile plumage.
In all 2 hybrid were identified both did not yield great picture for worthy sharing
Other species such as aquila were among those sighted in the site. For example this Steppe Eagle at 3rd plumage a plumage age not very common in Malaysia.
Greater spotted were on its best.
This year a rare Fulvescens morph was also sighted. Only one in all 3 site.
One third plumage Greater Spotted Eagle an age getting common over the year. No adult was sighted this year.
Black Kite were among the common migrant in the area although the figure are not as high as the other species of migratory raptor they appear in all visit.
In all the 3 harrier site have was studied and observed with great sighting of harrier. Although no pallid harrier was sighted compare to approximately 10 years back this was still an amazing discovery. Rarely does any work was conducted on 3 site concurrently and this show that more study will be required.
This was also an amazing year where harrier roosting was observed and documented showing consistent data and consistent behaviour. Pre roost site were detected and showing the same characteristic with harrier behaving and responding the same way. Perak site with additional documentation where immature paddy were used. Although this is already the time where some raptor began to move and with create more assumption this will be a great detail to observed again end of this year.
