Lesser VS Great Crested Tern
It is always amazing to observed the crested tern. My first observation was about 10 years back in Kuala Muda and later other observation from offshore. Back in Selangor coast, this species is not an unusual sight however, number remain varies depending on month. End of year are among those time where sighting are higher and figure can exceed the hundred.
Identification of this species can remain a challenges. Some marking which presumably make it easier for identification for me appear to be not so true. This are marking such as the bill colour. Further checking in some reference show I was wrong wrong. I noted many reliable reference were not using the bill colour as references however only as for as a possible feature to documents. Now I need to recheck some of the detail I have to ensure the details based on the latest information.
In all some feature were great to use for example
1. White on crowned for Lesser Crested tern are more extensive <=> Greater Crested Tern
2. If bill are yellow are more likely to be Great Crested Tern.
3. In present side by side, Great Crested Tern are Larger <=> Lesser Crested Tern
It will be interesting to observed them more in future to be more familiar to the species.
