Gould's Broadbill (Gould 1833)
I must say that this is one of the species nest which is more observed in Malaysia. Besides is a species which have been discover near to 200 years in 11 years time. :)
Uniquely this subspecies of rothschildi are only subspecies we observed here. So technically what is so interesting about this species?
In reference read up, I found out that their nesting coincide well with the south west monsoon for area like Malaysia. This is something new and May- June are mainly the month where this species are usually nesting. Other part of the world where is colder the bird nesting coincide with spring season. So we more likely observed this species in the rain :)
Also another point is the little hood as you can see in the photo which is about 2cm out in some reference seem to shade the nest from sun and rain. Interesting that they coincide with the monsoon season and they built nest to providing comfort as well for the weather they are in.
My first nest was in Fraser's Hill and how I see two nest near to one another. Later on many other nest was observed in other hill station. Many years back my first lowland nest was observed. Today it is getting common. I still yet to observed the claim from Belum which I think I will give a skip.
I have never take up so much interest on this nest till today. I guess it is never too late to document the nest which is still pending of information. :)
Below is a video of the nest.
