Digiscoping : Sony RX100 VA

 First Impression

Having heard from many other in regards to the use of Sony RX100 series camera for digiscope really impacted me. I decided to park this together with the new Kowa TSN 99A. Well when I open the box the grip and built amaze me. In my opinion no wander so many people go for that. 

Below are some of the thing I felt. Im not a Sony ambassador and the unit was purchased tested on both angle and straight scope Nikon ed82 and TSN 99A.

Built & Handling

I will say there is no worry about the built. Solid and dot not give you the sense to worry that the whole camera is breaking apart. This give me the advantage of confidence. In all that this feeling provide the button to me was not really in the place I want it to be. Nothing wrong with The Sony just that this was my first Sony unit. After sometimes of use I don't find them bothering and so on. Changes of any detail and set up become easy and your finger are technically on the right place.

Nevertheless, one think to note off from here is that this unit is not weather proof. This mean when use on digiscope one need to remember that the scope are waterproof not the camera.

The tilting screen was amazing for straight and angle scope. I was digiscoping once with straight and was able to tilt the screen up to ease myself in digiscoping. This is not much on an issue however on the angled scope.

This unit do accept electronic shutter release and work very well. Amazing unit to have for digiscope.

One however need to be very caution when using the DA4 adapter. The camera at 24mm is too long to be fixed. One need to make sure the length about 35mm and above in order to be able to fixed the DA4 and use it in the scope. In additional to that this mean one cannot switch off the unit without flipping open the adapter. 

Once get used to it this is not an issue. However the lens lean directly on the metal eyepiece therefore if fixed correctly it will not damage the scope eye piece.

Do not forget about the view finder. All I can say is that the view finder is amazingly accurate and one can get a sharp photo with the manual focusing. I have done so in many cases even in harsh heat wave.

Image Quality and Video

I won't have much to declare from here except for amazing. the 20mp photo give one the advantage nearly similar to a DSLR on a point and shoot. While this advantage was great the 4k video nail the whole set up one need in digiscoping. Even an amateur Digiscope will be able to take the advantage to be very similar to the professional unit.

The image quality was amazing. The sharpness are great and considering the price once is paying. see example below.

Even in worse lighting condition I say the unit together with the 99A scope produced amazing image especially once need it for identification purpose.

In all I will say this is a good unit if one thinking of using it for digiscope. I would recommend it. some other sample below.

Disadvantage

The only thing I wish this unit can provide is a slot fo include external mic. This was not available for this unit and the digiscope will become more bulky if one try to park one external mic. 

Other than that I think it a great unit to have if one need to do digiscope and hoping for a simple unit for their attachment.
